Well-maintained neighbourhoods play a critical role in how communities function. Clean streets, cared-for pavements and tidy public spaces contribute to safety, wellbeing, add value to your property investment and a shared sense of pride. When these spaces are neglected, the effects are often felt far beyond appearance alone.
Visible signs of neglect, such as litter, graffiti or unmaintained public spaces, signal that an area is uncared for. Over time, this perception can contribute to increased antisocial behaviour, vandalism and a general decline in community wellbeing. This is supported by a social theory known as the Broken Window theory. Conversely, when neighbourhoods are clean, orderly and visibly maintained, they send a powerful message of care, pride and accountability, encouraging positive behaviour and stronger social cohesion.
Transforming Neighbourhoods is a community-driven initiative established to improve the cleanliness, safety and visual quality of neighbourhoods through practical, hands-on action. The initiative launches in Johannesburg North, with the intention to extend into other areas as the model is refined and scaled.

Transforming Neighbourhoods is an initiative of Lucinda Harman and Homes of Distinction, working in association with the Healing Africa Foundation. The partnership brings together implementation leadership, governance oversight and community mobilisation to ensure the initiative is both effective and accountable.
What the Initiative Focuses On
The work of Transforming Neighbourhoods centres on visible improvements to shared public spaces. These include cutting grass and clearing overgrown verges, removing rubble and illegal dumping, taking down illegal signage and carrying out general clean-up and beautification activities.
A Community-Led Model
A defining feature of Transforming Neighbourhoods is its emphasis on community involvement. Residents, local businesses and stakeholders are encouraged to participate actively by volunteering time, contributing materials or equipment or supporting the initiative financially.
This approach ensures that communities are not passive recipients of change but active contributors to the improvement of their own neighbourhoods. It also helps build long-term care and accountability for shared spaces.
Governance and Financial Management
The partnership will see the Healing Africa Foundation play a key role in supporting Transforming Neighbourhoods through governance, financial management and donor accountability. All donations raised for the initiative are managed by HAF in line with non-profit best practice and applicable regulations.
This structure provides transparency and assurance to donors and community members, while enabling Transforming Neighbourhoods to focus on planning and implementation.
A Better Future – Together
Transforming Neighbourhoods is designed as a scalable model. While the initial focus is on Johannesburg’s northern suburbs, the initiative is structured to be replicated in other neighbourhoods over time. Each rollout is adapted to local needs while maintaining strong governance, accountability and meaningful community participation. To date, clean-up activities have been successfully completed in Hurlingham, followed by Jukskei Park, demonstrating the model in action and laying the groundwork for future expansion.
Guided by the principle “By the Community, for the Community, with the Community,” Transforming Neighbourhoods demonstrates how practical action, collaboration and accountability can come together to create cleaner, safer and more welcoming neighbourhoods.
