The Bartosch Foundation: transforming lives through soccer

In communities where opportunity feels distant and daily survival takes centre stage, sport can do something extraordinary. A ball on a dry, dusty makeshift field or parking lot becomes more than a game – it becomes a symbol of choice. It teaches discipline, teamwork, respect and resilience. It offers young people in South Africa a reason to show up, to belong, to believe.

That is why the Healing Africa Foundation partners with organisations that use sport for change, not just to entertain, but to empower communities. Among these, few embody this purpose as vividly as the Bartosch Foundation – a grassroots movement in Masiphumelele, Western Cape, transforming lives one kick, one child and one act of kindness at a time.

The Power of Sport to Shift Futures

Using sport as a tool for social change has always been a bridge – between cultures, between generations, between despair and hope. It gives children who may feel unseen a visible goal. It gives energy a direction and competition a purpose. In under-resourced townships across South Africa, structured youth sport programmes become a form of protection: a safe space where life skills grow as fast as fitness levels.

Every Sunday in Masiphumelele, that principle plays out in real time. Children gather on a makeshift field – some barefoot, some shy, most smiling – to train, learn and connect. They come for football, but they leave with lessons in discipline, teamwork, compassion and self-belief. This is the heartbeat of the Bartosch Foundation, where sport becomes a language of transformation.

The Bartosch Foundation: Where Kindness Meets Purpose

The Bartosch Foundation was born from an encounter between two people who refused to look away from the challenges around them – Petya Bartosch and Xolani Mahlulo.

During the height of the COVID-19 lockdown, Petya Bartosch, a creative professional, educated at the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography, began distributing food parcels in Masiphumelele township. There she met Xolani Mahlulo – a local coach using sport to keep young boys off the streets and out of trouble.

Within weeks, their shared vision crystallised: to create a structured youth development programme where children could find safety, mentorship and opportunity through sport. What started as informal training sessions on a parking lot has since evolved into a thriving community foundation that reaches hundreds of children through the Soccer Sunday Educational Program and related initiatives.

The Founders: Two Journeys, One Dream

Petya Bartosch believes in the ripple effect of kindness – that helping others sparks a chain of hope that spreads further than any single act. Her love of nature, photography and community development feeds her passion for building spaces where young people can thrive.

Xolani Mahlulo, born and raised in Masiphumelele, lost his mother at age eight and grew up with his extended family. Sport became his refuge and teacher – “Sport grew me, it helped me to become a better person.” . Rugby, cricket and soccer gave him focus and joy – and later, the tools to mentor others.

Together, they created a foundation where compassion meets commitment and where the power of sport becomes a framework for life.

A Model Built on Choice

At the core of the Bartosch Foundation’s philosophy is
choice – the choice every child deserves to make about their own future.

Through soccer, mentorship and educational support, the foundation teaches that each small decision matters: showing up on time, listening, helping a teammate, staying focused. Over time, those choices shape character, confidence and leadership. The programme offers much more than physical training – it integrates environmental awareness, social responsibility and youth leadership development, teaching children to value their surroundings and each other.

The Foundation’s motto sums it up beautifully: Awakening tomorrow’s leaders today.

Our Collaboration: Scaling Hope Through Partnership

The
Healing Africa Foundation (HAF) and the Bartosch Foundation share a common mission – to empower communities through sustainable development, skills building and social upliftment.

Our partnership builds on the strengths of both organisations – combining grassroots insight with project management, funding oversight, and donor engagement. Together, we are building an ecosystem where sport is not an end in itself, but a gateway to education, leadership, enterprise and employment.

Our collaboration ensures that at least 75% of beneficiaries come from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, in line with South Africa’s B-BBEE principles. It also establishes transparent mechanisms for funding, monitoring and reporting, ensuring that every donation translates into tangible, measurable impact.

Sport as the Gateway to Skills and Enterprise

Our joint focus goes beyond play. Each match and mentoring session is part of a larger journey – one that nurtures the skills South African children will need as adults: discipline, communication, teamwork, perseverance and self-belief.

In time, the dots between the sports field and the classroom, between play and professional growth will connect – coaching clinics, life-skills sessions, entrepreneurship workshops and community clean-ups all become part of the expanded model. The goal is simple but profound: use sport to unlock potential and potential to unlock prosperity.

A Vision for Replication

What’s happening in Masiphumelele is a blueprint for what can happen elsewhere. Rural and urban townships across South Africa share similar challenges – and similar untapped spirit. Through the HAF-Bartosch partnership, we aim to replicate this model nationally, adapting it to different sports, languages and community contexts.

Each replication strengthens a network of empowered communities – connected by purpose, supported by partners and driven by the belief that every child deserves a fair chance to choose their path.

Why It Matters Now

South Africa’s youth face high unemployment, limited access to structured recreation and increasing exposure to social risks. Programmes like those of the
Bartosch Foundation create safe, positive environments that foster resilience, belonging and hope. When children find meaning in teamwork and mentorship, they are less likely to fall prey to harmful influences – FACT!

Every whistle blown and every goal scored becomes a small victory against hopelessness – proof that collective effort and compassion can shift an entire generation’s outlook.
