In South Africa, gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) have become more than a social crisis – they are a national emergency. The statistics are staggering, the stories heartbreaking and the impact generational. Every day in South Africa, at least 15 women are murdered and 117 women report rape cases to the police, while many more go unreported, buried under fear, shame or disbelief.
This is not a marginal issue; it is a national emergency that touches every community. It robs women of safety, children of stability and families of hope. And while outrage echoes across the country, what South Africa needs most is action that multiplies impact – community by community, woman by woman.
What Lies Beneath the Statistics
Behind every number is a story – a girl who can’t walk home safely, a mother who hides bruises to keep the peace, a student too afraid to report assault. GBVF thrives in our society. But there is hope in one undeniable fact: empowered women transform communities.
A Grassroots Response: The Fight Back Initiative Africa
This is where the Healing Africa Foundation (HAF) steps in. Through its Fight Back Initiative Africa (FBIA), HAF partners with community-based organisations to equip women and girls with practical self-defence skills, trauma awareness and empowerment tools – turning fear into strength and silence into voice.
Born from the vision of building safer, more resilient communities, the Fight Back Initiative uses self-defence training as both a safety mechanism and a psychological intervention. It teaches women not just how to fight off an attacker, but how to reclaim control – physically, mentally and emotionally.
The programme partners with Storm Combat, who provide training; and includes basic awareness, situational safety, escape techniques and hands-on defence tactics derived from martial arts disciplines such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu, kickboxing and Krav Maga.
Participants often arrive quiet and unsure. But by the end of each session, something shifts – voices grow stronger and a sense of confidence replaces fear.
From Self-Defence to Social Impact: Training the Trainers
In addition to equipping victims with self defence training, HAF has adopted a Train-the-Trainer model – transforming the Fight Back Initiative from a one person at a time short empowerment project into a sustainable national movement.
Instead of training women one session at a time, the Foundation is inviting purpose-driven women and girls with a heart to teach – from schools, universities, workplaces and communities – to become Fight Back Trainers.
These trainees will receive certified instruction in:
- Simple Self-Defence Techniques
- Situational Awareness and Personal Safety
- Anti-Rape Strategies and Response
Once trained, they return to their communities as Community Safety Ambassadors, ready to teach others what they’ve learned. Each new trainer becomes a catalyst – multiplying the reach of the programme and creating a ripple effect of safety, awareness and empowerment.
Within months, a single class of trainers can impact hundreds of others. Imagine one university student empowering her residence hall, a teacher running weekly safety lessons for her students or a young mother teaching her neighbours to protect themselves. This is how change scales: through shared knowledge, local leadership and solidarity.
The long-term goal is to create a national network of certified Fight Back Trainers – a grassroots sisterhood of women who lead by example, defend one another and stand united against gender-based violence and femicide.
A Call to Action: Turn the Tide With Us
The Healing Africa Foundation believes that every South African – individual, company or community group – can be part of the solution. Ending GBVF requires your action and participation.
You can also watch our short video demonstrating exactly what the Fight Back Programme looks like – real training, real women, real impact.
Wondering what you can do about GBVF? Here’s your answer: contribute to the Fight Back Programme.
Every donation – big or small – helps equip a woman or girl with the skills, confidence and awareness she needs to protect herself. Your contribution goes directly towards:
Training victims and vulnerable women in simple self-defence, situational awareness and anti-rape techniques.
Supporting our Train-the-Trainer model, where influential women and girls are equipped to return to their communities and teach hundreds more.
If you’re able to, you can sponsor the training of a future Fight Back Trainer for R6 000, giving her the tools, certification and leadership to empower others.
But whatever you give makes a difference.
Every donation sets off a chain reaction of empowerment that could protect women, save lives and reshape communities.
This is how we turn fear into strength, silence into awareness and potential victims into protectors.
Do it today. Contribute. Sponsor. Empower.
Let’s turn the tide – together.
